Getting started

Is this actually free to use?

Yes - it’s completely free to use. If you take out a policy through us, we will receive a commission from the health fund. You don’t pay anything extra.

How does this actually work?

We look at your situation, budget, and what actually matters to you - then compare suitable options from our panel of health funds. We’ll walk you through the differences so you can make a proper decision.

Will I have to re-serve waiting periods if I switch?

Nope. If you move to the same or lower level of cover, your existing waiting periods are recognised. If you upgrade your cover, you will only need to serve waiting periods on the higher benefits.

What if I change my mind after switching?

All health funds offer a cooling-off period (usually 30 days). If you change your mind during that time, you can cancel and get a full refund.

Medicare & tax

What is the Medicare Levy Surcharge (and do I need to worry about it)?

The Medicare Levy Surcharge (MLS) is an extra tax some higher-income earners pay if they don’t have private hospital cover. It’s designed to encourage people into the private system and reduce pressure on Medicare.

What is Lifetime Health Cover loading?

Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) loading adds 2% to your premium for every year you’re over 30 when you first take out hospital cover. It sticks around for 10 years if you keep your cover.

How does the private health insurance rebate work?

The government may cover part of your premium through a rebate, depending on your income and age. It’s usually applied automatically and helps make cover more affordable.

Your cover

What's the difference between hospital and extras cover?

Hospital cover helps with hospital stays, surgery, and in-hospital treatment.
Extras cover helps with everyday services like dental, physio, and optical.

What do the hospital cover tiers actually mean?

Basic - minimal cover
Bronze - essential treatments
Silver - broader coverage
Gold - full coverage

How do waiting periods actually work?

Typical waiting periods include:
- 2 months for general services
- 6 months for some extras
- 12 months for pre-existing conditions
- 12 months for pregnancy

What are gap payments (and why do they exist)?

Gap payments are the difference between what your doctor charges and what Medicare plus your insurer covers. Some funds reduce or remove these costs entirely.

Switching funds

What does switching health funds actually involve?

Switching is usually simple:
1. Choose your new policy
2. Apply (we can help)
3. Your new fund handles the cancellation
4. Your history transfers across
5. Your new cover starts

What do I need to switch funds?

All you’ll need:
- Medicare card
- Payment details
- Current policy details

Will I lose anything if I switch?

In most cases, no. Your waiting periods and many benefits carry across when switching to a similar level of cover.
